Driver Safety List

We have outlined a few safe driving tips to help you to have a great travel experience when hiring or renting a car:

  • Remember the safety of both people within your car as well as outside which includes pedestrians, cyclists, and other motorists.
  • Ensure you give way to all pedestrians and take care when travelling in built-up areas.
  • Do not drink and drive.
  • Do not use a mobile phone while driving.
  • Wear a seat belt at all times while driving or as a passenger in a vehicle.
  • If you do take medication, either prescription or over the counter, please ensure you are aware of any side effects that may affect your ability to effectively operate a motor vehicle.
  • Before proceeding on your journey, take a few minutes to become familiar with the operational features of the car you have hired. Locate where things are to ensure if they are required for an emergency you can effectively and efficiently access them. For example, know where the hazard light switch is. Don't be trying to find things while driving. Lack of concentration on driving and the road will put yourself and others in danger.
  • Check the positioning of the rear view and side mirrors to ensure you have clear visibility.
  • Ensure you adhere to the correct speed limits on all roads and you obey the school zone times to respect students, parents, teachers and carers.
  • Specific speed limits are assigned to built-up areas that host a large amount of foot traffic. These speed limits are to provide pedestrians with a safe walking environment as well as ensuring motorists are driving for the environment around them.
  • Take care around road works. Speed limits are reduced to protect road workers as well as allowing motorists to be more vigilant of any changes to road conditions.
  • Please adhere to the driving regulations and if you are visiting Australia from overseas, please review our driving rules to ensure your safety and the safety of others.
  • Avoid driving tired and be aware of the warning signs such as yawning, heavy eyes, blurred vision, and reduced concentration. If you start to experience any of these signs, please pull over at a safe place so you can rest or swap drivers.

Keep in mind the above safe driving tips to ensure you and your fellow passengers have a safe journey.

Driving in the Country

When driving in rural areas, it's extremely important to be careful of:

  • Potholes, rough surfaces and animals carcasses.
  • Livestock and wildlife crossing the road.
  • Single lane bridges.
  • Large trucks.
  • Railway crossings that do not have boom gates and / or alert lights to advise of approaching trains.
