When Driving in Auckland

Arriving from overseas? Read the following basic and important rules to help you stay safe on your driving adventure in Auckland.

  • Drive on the left hand side of the road.
  • Always give way to your right.
  • Obey all speed limits which are advertised in kilometres (km). Open roads have a speed limit of 100km/h while suburban areas are speed limited to 50km/h. Always drive to the conditions of the road and never exceed the enforced speed limits.
  • Seat belts are to be worn at all times with children seated in appropriate child seating restraints.
  • Do not drink and drive. Heavy penalties apply for all drivers if caught drunk driving.
  • Do not overtake on double yellow lines. These are in place to advise that visibility and / or road conditions impede upon your ability to safely overtake another vehicle, truck, or motorcyclist.

Always take care and be vigilant when driving as weather conditions and road designs (especially on narrow country roads or terrain roads) can impose restrictions on your driving ability.
